✭✭✭✭ JASON MORAN CELEBRATES THE 80th ANNIVERSARY OF THE VILLAGE VANGUARD ✭✭✭✭
On February 22, 1935 MAX GORDON opened the VILLAGE VANGUARD. 
To celebrate the 80th Anniversary, JASON MORAN will present six nights of widely varied entertainment,
each night reflecting a different aspect of the Vanguard's glorious past.

March 10
SOLO PIANO
FROM THE BEGINNING SOLO PIANO HAS BEEN AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE VANGUARD.
ON TUESDAY MARCH 10th, THE VANGUARD WILL HOST A NIGHT OF SOLO PIANO FEATURING
 KENNY BARRON, STANLEY COWELL, FRED HERSCH, ETHAN IVERSON, AND JASON MORAN.

March 11
POETS
IN 1935 POETRY WAS THE MAIN ATTRACTION AT THE VANGUARD.
ON WEDNESDAY MARCH 11th, POETRY RETURNS WITH JASON MORAN & BANDWAGON
FEATURING ELIZABETH ALEXANDER & YUSEF KOMUNYAKAA

Elizabeth Alexander is a poet, essayist, playwright and teacher. In 2009, she read her poem “Praise Song for the Day”
for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Yusef Komunyakaa is a recipient of the 1994 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry.

COMEDY
POLITICAL SATIRE AND COMEDY HAVE A RICH HISTORY AT THE VANGUARD.
LENNY BRUCE, IRWIN COREY, WALLY COX, PHIL LEEDS, MIKE NICHOLS & ELAINE MAY ALL PERFORMED STAND-UP HERE.

MONK NIGHT
THE STORY OF THELONIOUS MONK AT THE VANGUARD BEGINS WITH LORRAINE GORDON.
LORRAINE WAS WORKING WITH HER FIRST HUSBAND, ALFRED LION, WHO FOUNDED BLUE NOTE RECORDS.
SHE CONVINCED MAX GORDON TO GIVE MONK A WEEK AT THE VANGUARD. HE OPENED ON SEPTEMBER 14, 1948.
“AND NOBODY CAME. NONE OF THE SO-CALLED JAZZ CRITICS. NONE OF THE SO-CALLED COGNOSCENTI. ZILCH.” 

ON FRIDAY MARCH 13th, JASON MORAN & BANDWAGON PLAY THE MUSIC OF THELONIOUS MONK ALL NIGHT

ON SATURDAY MAR 14th, THE VANGUARD PRESENTS LIVE:TIME // THE QUILTS OF GEE’S BEND
WITH JASON MORAN & THE BANDWAGON FEATURING BILL FRISELL & ALICIA HALL MORAN

Jason Moran presents a work commissioned by The Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The “improvisational’ quilts that inspired this music were created by a group of women who live in the small hamlet of Gee’s Bend, Alabama.

ESSENTIAL TO THE PULSE OF THE VANGUARD IS THE TENOR SAXOPHONE.
COLEMAN HAWKINS, JOHN COLTRANE, SONNY ROLLINS...
CHARLES LLOYD FIRST APPEARED AT THE VANGUARD IN 1965. HE MAKES HIS LONG AWAITED RETURN ON HIS BIRTHDAY.
